Our I Ching for November 4, 2020

43: Determination

This hexagram signifies on the one hand a break-through after a long accumulation of tension, as a swollen river breaks through its dikes, or in the manner of a cloudburst. On the other hand, applied to human conditions, it refers to the time when inferior people gradually begin to disappear. Their influence is on the wane; as a result of resolute action, a change in conditions occurs, a break-through.

Guai (Determination) Action: Breakthrough

Untangle the knots and soften the glare. Determination can be recognized in the eyes.

Some resolution is pointing to a breakthrough, but decisive action will be necessary. If you are diligent warding off negative tendencies or bad influences, goodness will indeed prevail.

The persistence of negativity is a factor. Just when you think an undesirable element has been uprooted, it will pop up again, sprouting through some crack in the pavement of decent society. Lies and deceit are more common and persistent, but should also be rooted out diligently. Be resolute against the forces of negativity. But certain rules must be followed for your efforts to succeed.

1. Do not compromise with corruption. Misdeeds and shameful actions must be identified for what they are and quickly discredited.
2. You cannot successfully resist or defeat negativity on its own terms. Positive alternatives, which lead away from the nature of the problem, are more appropriate than trying to counter corruption with raw power.
3. The means used to counter negativity need to be consistent with the result you want to achieve. You cannot stop the spreading of lies by spreading more of them.

"If something is boring after two minutes, try it for four. If still boring, then eight. Then sixteen. Then thirty-two. Eventually one discovers that it is not boring at all."

- John Cage

Hu Gua (hidden influence) 1 Creative: Initiate

A New Beef Stew!
Sam Sifton-
Good morning. “People generally were awake — wide awake, in fact — very early yesterday,” The Times reported on the day after the presidential election of 1860, “for they knew they had a duty to perform which could not occur but once in four years, and in the actual shape it assumed, perhaps not more than once in a lifetime. And whether they were Republicans or Fusionists, they went to work with a will.” And so it was again yesterday, at least for those who had not voted early: Americans exercised their prerogative as independent citizens, and made their voices known. The counting continues. A long night stretches on.
Still, I'm thankful for Melissa Clark's new recipe for beef stew (above), which as good as it might be on the election night it was made, is all the better the next evening, as the flavors cure. You might try it yourself, food for comfort in coming days.

There is a great deal of unmapped country within us which would have to be taken into account in an explanation of our gusts and storms.

Zong Gua (underlying cause) 23 Split Apart: Regenerate

Success comes when you untangle the knots

When the unscrupulous reveal their weaknesses be ready to act.

Uprooting corruption in high places is difficult, and can only be accomplished by a steady and determined effort. Just as weeds spring back to life after they have been chopped down, corruption tends to re-emerge, even after initial efforts seem to have worked. Only perseverance can succeed against deeply rooted negative forces.

The buttocks without skin. One moves poorly now, holding on to a goat. Regret goes away. Hearing the words, no belief.

You made decisions and some of them you will regret. It is life and it means you lived it. Don't regret them, even though some were wrong, or could have been done differently. Live the now without regretting the past or you will not live at all.

Someone seems to have overcome adversity and is ready to begin anew. When starting a new project after solving a problem, take care to see that destructive tendencies are overcome or balanced out at the beginning.

Gua Poem: The ring of authority, raise it at the king's court. Proclaiming truth is dangerous. Statements come from the capital. Not fruitful to undertake war. Fruitful to proceed probing.

The same problem you now face will appear again in the future.
